The day was the 7th of July, 1977 ... it was a Thursday.
I remember going to school ... I remember that I was in 3rd grade ... I remember there being much talk about the date.
7/7/77 ... it was a pretty special date.
I remember thinking "Wow ... imagine if you had your birthday on a date like that".
I remember finishing my day at school and going home ... well I don't really remember that bit ... but I assume I did.
I remember getting home .. and discovering a higher than normal level of excitement ... with all manner of family goings on ... it WAS someones birthday!
It was my Mum's birthday.
I remember feeling ashamed that I hadn't remembered in the morning ... I remember feeling ashamed that I didn't KNOW what the date of my own Mum's birthday was.
I remember making a promise to myself ... and my Mum ... that I would never, ever again forget her birthday.
Happy Birthday Mum ... miss you every single day ... but even more on your birthday.
Crying now . . . why does her 75th seems such a short time ago? And look at her happy smile, not the vacancy of the final few years . . . xxx
ReplyDeleteI know ... once she reached the edge of that downhill slope she hurtled down it :0(

This is so so beautiful. Those small things. I lost my mother this past year (a year this coming November) and this made me so wistful and yet connected at the same time. Thank you for this beautiful post. xo
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it Rebecca ... so sorry about your Mum ... I always think it helps to acknowledge your feelings ... they're real and they're yours.

Lovely post. Isn't it interesting how memory works?
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is ... I'll remember something like this from over 30 years ago ... but struggle to recall what I did last week ;0)

ReplyDeleteYep ... you just never know what little event is going to stick in your memory. I wonder why some things stay and others disappear as soon as they happen :0)

I remember forgetting my mothers birthday one year, I can't remember how old I was but I don't think she ever forgave me, she is that sort of mother. 75 is special, I am lucky as my dad just turned 80 and is fighting fit. xxx
ReplyDeleteThat's great ... hope he remains that way for many, many more years to come.

Mums are the best. And you appreciate that fact so much more when you become a mum yourself.
ReplyDeleteI was born July '77 but not on the 7th day, so it's always been a special date for me too!
That is SO true!
DeleteHappy Birthday :0)
