Washington for the weekend....

My first impression of Washington is that it is sooo clean. New York may have bagfuls of character...but it isn't going to win the "Tidiest Town Award"

Washington has big wide streets, no rubbish lying around and it's so much warmer. Fourteen degrees when we arrived!

The train arrived ahead of schedule....so we were in Washington by 10.30am. Our hotel kindly let us book in early....so we had somewhere to dump our bags....and then it was back out to discover the city .

We got the hang of the subway even faster here....we've used more public transport in the last week than we have in the last 15 years.

We wandered by the White House.....Barrack Obama didn't offer us a cup of tea......saw the Capitol Building ....and then made our way to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. We checked out all the planes, space shuttles etc that they had on display and watched an IMAX movie on the Hubble Telescope.

By then our first day was all but over, we found some dinner, went back to the hotel and to bed.

Saturday dawned sunny and unseasonably warm...or so the locals said. There was lots of walking today......we started off with breakfast at the oldest restaurant in Washington...Old Ebbitt Grill. I had the crab cakes....delicious....one of the best things I have ever eaten, the kids had scrambled eggs....the best they had ever eaten....Hubby had ham and bacon stuffed French toast.....one of the worst things he has ever eaten! Oh well.....you can't please all the people all the time!

Then we made our way to the Washington Monument, on to the World War Two Memorial, past the Reflecting Pools, up the stairs to the Lincoln Memorial, through the Korean War Memorial, across to the Martin Luther King Memorial, around the tidal basin to the Jefferson Memorial and then up the road to the US Holocaust museum!

Ouch....my feet hurt....Hubby has been sent out to the "convenience store" for some gel inserts for my boots. I'm hoping they perform a miracle cure on my aching, over worked tootsies.

We're about to leave for dinner.....that's another 7 blocks away....so I'll soon find out.......
