Just call me Nostradamus ...

I was awoken this morning by Master 14 slipping into bed beside me.

This only ever means one thing … he wants the day off school.

Now I've got "sick versus sickie" detection down to a fine art.

It took but a glance to tell me that this request was of the "sickie" variety.

"What's wrong?"

"I've got a bit of a headache."

Now I'm a long time headache sufferer … so they … "they" being my kids ... know I'm a sucker for this particular excuse.

So I used the old "Well there will be no television and no PlayStation and no iPad … and you will stay in bed … without your phone."

Generally this threat is enough to give the malingerer the burst of energy he requires to get up and go to school.

But not so this morning … he accepted the conditions … and I accepted the inevitable fact that I had him home for the day.

I sent him back to bed … and set about rearranging my day.

And as if by magic … at exactly and precisely 9:00am … he emerged from his room with a spring in his step, a twinkle in his eye … and a long boring day ahead of him.

  1. I remember that ploy well. And the added threat of them leaving their sick bed resulting in my safely delivering them to school for what ever was left of the day worked like magic too. Wait til he gets older and has a crack at wagging school.

  2. forgot to say your video grilling was brilliant, I love the 'nothing much is happening at school today' classic line dragged out by many a child. School, such a waste of time!!

  3. No way would we have got away with this. We'd have to have been on our death beds to stay at home. I went though my entire childhood never, ever having a day off sick! x

  4. He's a TERRIBLE liar! My kids are the same; tell them to look you in the eye and they can't keep a straight face, they're rubbish!
You are such a soft touch, Jo - mine would have been whipped of to school with a flea in their ear! xxx

  5. Miracles happen at 9.00 am! and sometimes just after the call to the school to let them know they will be absent! I do seem to have appalling judgement at times though, Iv'e sent them in when they have been quite ill, my 'sick' 'sickie' detector hasn't a clue, and kids are goooood at pretending x x x

  6. LOL-I will call you Nosty for short. I'd have popped him into the car and delivered him to school a bit late! It's a good thing he's so cute, even when he is really very terribly trying to lie.
