Green thumb?

Yet another beautiful winters day ... in this ... the warmest Sydney winter on record.

The sun is shining ... begging me to come outside and spend a wee while.

So I justified my little sojourn into the sunshine by pretending I was doing a spot of gardening.

Hubby planted some carrots a while back.

Today, I noticed how their plump juicy bodies were peeking up from the dirt.  Too big to be contained within the soil for a moment longer.

I began to experience delicious visions of  carrot soup, carrot sticks in dip, creamy coleslaw, carrot cakes with cream cheese icing ... or what the heck I could just chomp straight in ... Bugs Bunny style.

So I knelt down in the warm earth ... my fingers reaching for that glorious orange jewel ... pulling it free from the soil that had lovingly nursed it into maturity.

What the????

Houston ... we have a problem!

  1. Do you moderate comments now? I posted one about an hour ago but it hasn't appeared but I don't remember seeing anything about moderation. It just said published but there's nothing there.

Carrots don't like fertiliser. It can distort them. Could this be your problem?

They look as if they will taste very sweet. A nice little snack, says she, finishing off a handful of fresh spring peas which had to be shelled.

    1. Hi Jan ... No I don't have comment moderation .... it must have been a technical glitch ... I seem to have plenty of those ;0)
I don't think we fertilised these ... my gardening style is usually plant and forget ... I think they may just be another glitch ... nature instead of technical this time.

    1. Not even the rabbits have eaten these ... I hope it's not a sign ;0)
I usually manage to kill more things than I grow ... so I'm impressed too ... even if they are a little stunted.

  3. I've had the same problem before with carrots...we mixed some sand into the soil so it's a really loose mix - that way its easier for the root to grow down...bet they still taste great though!! x

  4. Oh. But I'll bet you love it just the same as the "regular" carrots.

    1. Well they do say good things come in small packages ... specially diamonds ... if only it was that kind of carat/carrot ;0)

  5. Aaah well at least you tried! If it makes you feel any better I tried to grow carrots a while back with my boys and they looked remarkably similar. We also didn't fertilise so maybe that's the key? xx

    1. There seems to be a lot of mutant carrots out there ... I'm feeling much better about mine now ;0)

  6. I had a similar issue, though mine where long and thin, but all twisted and warped back on themselves. I did a lot of googling. The soil is too firm/heavy was the on going option on there. Am yet to attempt to grow them again. Have stuck to my other veggies.
